How To Dress Well presents.. "Ocean Floor For Everything"

It's hard to believe that How To Dress Well still isn't as known as some of the other up and coming artists in the experimental R&B, after all he's seen by many people as one of it's founding fathers.
With two good previous releases, and with this single recently coming abroad we can expect some good stuff in the future..

The MVMNT Presents : Scott Kid (Interview)

Scott Kid is a California based artist who's on the rise and gaining recognition from his two releases "Black Box" and "White Noise". Amazing music, with a great deal of soul and depth.

We here at THE MVMNT were fortunate enough to have spoken with him, so better we let him tell you about himself as opposed to us trying to describe him..

THE MVMNT presents: Scott Kid

1. For the people who may not know who you are, and don't know your music. How would you introduce yourself?
- With a smile and a glass of whisky.

2. Within what genre would you place your music in, if you would even choose to label your sound at all?
- I wouldn't want to label it because I feel it is limiting. Whatever is coming out is what's coming in, which varies depending on time and place and experiences during the making of the record.

3. What's a common statement from fans in regards to your music?

-That they don't really know where to place it I guess.

4. Many people, including us here at THE MVMNT would place you in the Experimental R&B category, do you feel that's a valid placement?
- I guess you can say that at the moment. Obviously there is this thing going on right now with it, and it's very exciting, because in the process it is creating an entirely new sound. It's all of us 80's babies who grew up on Boyz 2 Men and TLC in the 90's, and have been intaking so much experimental electronic music in the 2000's. Some of it is jumping on the fad, some of it is people who feel that they are hearing music that is coming out of their own souls and they are now in a time that people are interested and accepting that type of experimentation. But I wouldn't want to put myself in that category because the next record may sound completely different.

5. Who's inspired you to do what you do?
- I think inspiration is something Godly or other worldy. I am just grateful when it knocks on my door. What comes on the page or the instrument is not in my control. But as far as "who", For this project...I would say myself as a 12 year old boy.

6. How do you feel about other artists in the modern R&B movement, such as The Weeknd, JMSN, Julian and so on.. ?

- The only one I have heard in that group of artists is The Weeknd. I think his first mixtape was a gift from God and I think he should be careful moving forward. But to each his own.

7. How old were you when you began writing music, how old are you now, and how old do you hope to be when your music career becomes realized?
- My earliest memory of writing a song would be when I was 10. I am 24 now. I make my music for myself and I realized that a long time ago.

8. There's not much about you on the Internet, can fans make the assumption that you like keeping a level of mystery?

- No mystery tactic. I just want absolutely nothing to do with the music business. The only reason I put it on the internet is because then it becomes immortal and I think we all want that. If people find it, I am very grateful because that means on some level we are connected. I will never ever push my music on anyone.

9. Why "White Noise" and "Black Box" is there significance behind the names?
- Always significance. Black Box is the only thing that's left after a plane crashes. And in that small box is some sort of explanation or truth. Whether it be screams of agony, regrets of the person in control (or out of control), cries of love, or complete surrender of truth. White Noise is the noise that completely drowns out anything and everything. It's the static noise that you hear when you have lost every ounce of who you think you are or were. It's a poisonous noise.

10. How much does your city influence your music?
- I think that anywhere you are influences even the tone of your voice. It's not really the city that influences, more the place that you are at in the city. I can't make a record in the same place twice I have realized. It's almost like not being able to live in the same house that you did with an ex girlfriend. You have to have a complete change of place to be able to move on from the last relationship. I write all over the place though so it's really a combination of cities.

11. How far are you looking to go, want to be a superstar with a song on the radio, or would you like to be a successful indie artist?

- Like I said before, I make this music because it honestly is the only thing keeping my soul alive. It may sound selfish, but I make this music for myself. Plus It's the closest thing to being immortal. Don't we all want that in some aspect? I put it on the internet because I want to make it available to people who are supposed to connect to it. That's why I don't sell music. Because the minute I sell music, the minute all of that dies. People call it selling your soul for a reason. I can sell newspapers. I can sell cups of coffee. I can't sell music. I have learned that the hard way.

12. If given the opportunity to collaborate with anyone, who would it be?

- Sigur Ros. Beach House. Antony Haggarty. Portishead. Those people are all connected to something closer to religion than music.

13. Do you feel like you've grown as far as an artist from one ep to the other?
- I have no idea how to judge something like that. I feel that all art needs to be is honest. If your honest, the rest is up to the individuals listening. Someone can think "Chopsticks" is brilliant. I think children are brilliant. Because there is no censor. In that way, sometimes I feel we regress as artists.

14. What can you tell us about Agina Alvarez and Reallyfe?
- Agina is absolutely brilliant. She was a gift. She literally walks in and does one take and leaves. She is this incredibly sweet and beautiful girl, and the minute the red button is hit, she channels something else, something deep as fuck. That's why I love working with her, because every time I hear her sing I feel like I am witnessing something. I am grateful and blessed that she wanted to be a part of the project. But I feel that way about everyone who has gotten involved. Reallyfe is a dear friend of mine, and another brilliant soul. This guy never stops. He does it all. Check out his group Future 3. It's him and this guy Cue (who was on "white noise") as well as this dude Axl Folie, who actually produces for Kendrick Lamar among others. Their music is wild. Reallyfe does all of the videos too.

15. We are in an a time of "CREWS" from OVOXO, to Odd Future, to Young Money to A$AP and Raider Klan.. What we want to know is are you part of a crew?

- No I am not. I am part of a group of artists and friends who support each other I guess you could say. I have been open to doing collaborations at the moment. I just did a few tracks with this brilliant kid from Toronto named Emay. I am not sure if you have heard his stuff, but this guy is also channeling something wild. I currently started working with this guy Case Move from Detroit, this guy is the second coming of R. Kelly, he's got his first EP "Folkways" coming out this month, which I am on a few tracks and co-wrote some stuff. I really think "crews" are just people who organically come together because they share a similar mindset.

16. Are you heavily involved with music blogs?
- Not too much at all. I follow a few that I trust, but music usually comes to me at the right moment it's supposed to. A lot of this stuff is very saturated. But I think blogs are the new labels. Run by the people who love music most. It's the best possible time to have your music heard right now in history I think.

17. Are you a strong social networker, how reliable is your twitter and your facebook account to fans?
- I have them all set up. But it's more of a way for me to share what's inspiring me at the moment. Whether it be something visual, musical, quotes etc. I don't like to talk much. You are the first interview I have actually done.

18. Is there anything you'd like to add, anything you'd like to say to the people reading?
- il faut (d'abord) durer

Edit : Scott Kid would like to mention that Emay just released his first full length "Adam" for free.
" It's an amazing piece of work and I was honored to be a part of it" -Scott Kid

SO GRAB THAT WHILE YOU CAN FOLKS!!! We will have a feature on him for sure!

Scott, we really appreciate the time and our honored to have been your first interview.

And as far as our audience, we urge you to listen to the his EP's, they are art in it's truest form, and as we can see from this interview this man deserves support, great answers, smart answers, depth and a little bit of charm. Gotta love it.

Scott Kid has our backing, and we look forward to his next release, as should all of you.

Until then here's "White Noise" and "Black Box" Scott Kid's two EP's

JMSN - †Priscilla† (Album Review)

This review is long over due here at THE MVMNT, we've been wanting to do a review for this album for a while now, we just needed to wait and make it just right.  †Priscilla†  is one of those albums that you discover and never stop playing, we listen to JMSN daily. Fact.

†Priscilla† starts off with a "Choices" which is the introduction to his hit single Jameson, in this prelude we hear Christian's voicemail, and people who call him, never get a response and play the "big shot" card, the fame changed him according to the callers after the last message we are greeted with epic strings, and amazing vocal production. Moments are created in every second, from the door slams to the liquor being poured, to the harmonica that plays the lead. And it doesn't stop being good once he sings, it slows down, and with an eerie feel to the story we have that darkness that has been proven successful in the Experimental R&B genre, Christian drinks Jameson alone, and thinks about his life.. Typical, amazing production, and a brilliant song.
One thing to look for is the transition game that JMSN brings, and how amazing the post-production was, every song goes into the other flawlessly and  with that being said "Alone" was the first track that I ever heard from Christian, and I fell in love. The atmosphere, the filtered drums, the reverb vocals, the melodies, his epic falsetto chorus, and the crazy shit you notice if you're paying attention.. The bass riff on the down chorus, the dice, the sonar sound, the string play, the build ups, the vocals are amazing in every way.
From "Alone" we go to "Remember The Time" a pop tune in it's finest form, the vocals, the production almost has a boy band feel at some point, but he still keeps the experimental sense highly in effect. The strings, the drums. "Silencio, no hay banda, no hay orcesta". The bright guitars, that arp that constantly plays in the background, and of course Christian's voice asking us if we remember those times where thing were easier.
Every track on this record is a good one, I mean there are some I've only heard a few times, but that's just because I've been busy listening to the other amazing songs. "Somewhere", "Fallin", "Fire", "Let U Go", "Lights" and "Nunca Se Sabra" are good songs, they're just not as good as the rest well in my opinion.
"Something" is an amazing song in every sense, those guitars, the way the vocals are produced the beat, and the fucking crazy drum lines towards the end of the song. The chorus like alone, is a catchy falsetto and just suits the song's vibe all too well.
"Runaway" is a song I really liked, and it's one of those that doesn't get talked about all that much, it's an acoustic jam and the vocals are amazing, guitars like that compliment Christian's vocal ability to a tee.
"Love & Pain"... Sexy sax man, seriously though the saxophone on that lead line makes you want to have sex, and if it doesn't there's something wrong with you, the thing you notice about JMSN, from his strings and all of these sounds and instruments he uses, you can tell he's a multi- instrumentalist and that in itself gives you a huge level of respect for the artist.. This is an amazing song.
"Girl I Used To Know" probably one my favorite songs, or at least one of the most catchy. The arp, the strings, the vocal production, those vocal runs that make me feel that I'm within a mix of funk, soul and most of all, old school pop music, like "Remember The Time" it reminds me of the boy band era in the late 1900's and early 2000's. The chorus and pre chorus are amazing, and there definitely of the sing along variety, and the lead in to the song's featured rapper, when those guitars start playing this funk solo almost, and then dude comes in with his verse, good verse also may I add, great song in general.

In conclusion, this album needs to be heard, not only by fans of Experimental R&B, but fans of music, this album is art, the production could be some of the best I've ever heard, and he did it all himself, Christian (JMSN) is a genius, and we have a great respect and admiration for him.
Usher even spoke of JMSN and his album claiming that JMSN was his favorite new act.. Buy into the hype, because it's worth it as far as †Priscilla†

THE VERDICT: 8.5

Indie, soulful and with a few pop ties here and there, this mixtape is something to be heard. Since then, he's released a new single entitled "American Nightmare".

Fancy Me Yet?

Why yes.. We do fancy Indie-Pop act Fancy Me Yet... There are too many reasons to love this duo, on vocals, Natasha Jeanne formerly known as JD Natasha, a Latin act that had a great deal of success at a very early age, well time's passed, she's grown and it's easy to see that all of the experience she gained over the years has paid off now in a different realm of music, Alex the band's multi-instrumentalist is a great talent himself, the musical prowess is strong and the chemistry between the two is heard from the amazing tunes they've managed to release in such a short period of time. Talented folk, making amazing music.

All of us here at THE MVMNT already consider Fancy Me Yet as an Indie powerhouse, and promise you all that labels will beg to test the duo's penmanship on a signature.

On another note, It's always good to see people from our own area doing big things, and this duo is doing nothing but. With one EP out and another one in the works, people better get ready, and they better get stoked. We can't wait to see what Natasha and Alex have in store.

Fancy Me Yet's latest single "Don't Be So Surprised"

He is.. JMSN

What do you get when you mix art and music? You get JMSN (Christian Berishaj). This guy does everything, song writer, producer, multi-instrumentalist. You name it and he does it. You may have heard of him before as Christian TV (pop act), but recently he's been getting a lot of attention from his experimental R&B debut "Priscilla" which was released early 2012. Some people compare him to The Weeknd but all of us here at THE MVMNT think he has developed a unique style not to be compared with anything or anyone else.

Buy his debut album Priscilla and have a listen for yourself.

Meanwhile we are sure you will have Jameson on repeat.

The Weeknd Debut Tour - Ft. Lauderdale Show

THE MVMNT attended The Weeknd's first ever South Florida show last night, and it was incredible. He took a while to start, but we all know Abel loves to build dramatic tension. His set was about an hour long, including tracks from all three mixtapes, he even included "Crew Love" and his cover of Drake's "Trust Issues". His live band was amazing, those dudes have it on point, we got a chance to talk to them outside of the bus, and from what they say these dudes all work hard. So go see The Weeknd perform live as soon as possible.

The view from Ft. Lauderdale's Revolution, long lines, balloons and the masses, an insane amount of people.

Performance videos coming soon..

Julian - Black Heart (Mixtape) Review

Now, I assume all of us have heard The Weeknd, through Drake's successful "word of mouth" tactic, the doors for canadian native Abel Tesfaye opened quicker than the hearts and legs of his female listeners. He practically birthed a new movement, and put R&B back on the map with experimental sounds and ambiance, this dude samples Beach House, Thieves Like Us and other obscure acts. Now, he and Drake made a movement of their own, leaving all of the work behind them to fellow Toronto artists. OVOXO was born from both Drake's OVO (October's Very Own) and The Weeknd's XO. With that being said, for this review we focus on one of XO's finest, perhaps taking a few of The Weeknd's influence.. We introduce to you.. Julian Cruz (Julian) and his "Black Heart" mixtape.

Black Heart is an experimental R&B album in the very definition of the genre, with mixes of Spanish guitars, post-dub like beats, reverb induced piano and beautiful amplification of clean guitar tones worthy of a rock act, Julian's voice is complimented by various elements, like The Weeknd, and JMSN the beats are nothing short of intricate and interesting. A lot goes on behind the crooner, from the first track.. "Intrinsic Worth" we get this eerie feel from the get go, Julian's voice welcomes you as he sings, the song then immediately swings from pads into this guitar arp that leads into the verse, first lyrics have to do with the preparation Julian goes through before a sexual encounter, and then elaborates on the topic also by talking to the girl and basically showing her the ropes. Now, some people may notice that his voice and the music sometimes don't fit, something sounds off almost, well this record has absolutely no auto tune, completely natural which means he sometimes sings off key, you'd think that might be a horrible thing, but it sounds good. Who knows? Maybe more people will start singing off key if this record sees a lot of success. Anyway, "JOY" is the second song off of this album and this one's actually kind of touching, not in just a sexy way but it's legitimately a nice, pleasant song to listen to. Nice guitars, calming synth pads, and lyrics about that special someone, the beat also has some of those awesome modulated pitch samples we love so much. Something different, a direction into perhaps a more Indie band like feel, who knows. It works, it's weird but it works. But the cute message didn't last long, and who are we kidding, we love a good fuck song, we love sexual, sensual music. In his next track Julian picks up right where he left off, explaining to his partner how good he is in bed, he's very convincing when he tells her it's "Different This Time" he even asks the girl if she knows what she's doing at one point, a tale of drugs, hot women, something we've heard from XO before, and all I'm saying is that we would like to be invited to one of these occasions, these songs make everyone to party with XO. So bring the pads, the weird vocal production and throw in some riffs that sound like Carlos Santana himself was in the booth and I think any woman would like to get naked. It's nature, Julian understood this and he continues this process for much of the album, "Ascencion", "Pace It", "Bonita" (Pretty Lady) are loaded with these classical guitar tones, as for "Potion" and the title track "Black Heart" have a much darker creepy tone, clean yet creepy.. Some effects, maybe some wah or anything that could be found on any guitarist's pedal board, but damn it sounds so good. One of favorite tracks, "Believer" has this incredible piano tone, and could not sound sexier, the drums are so elaborate for an R&B track, and in the bridge has this sort of drop with some synth. In this track Julian speaks on what he does best apparently, fuck and we don't mind it, because these songs are dope. The introduction to "Black Heart" is amazing, and could have not been produced better, that track takes and finishes the album with a bang, the dubstep like bass and the rock band like vocals, it's short but so good. And even with it's brief duration still manages to make us love the track.

In conclusion, XO is a group of talented people. Musicians, video directors, artists in both visual realm as well as production, they need not one outsider to step in. Unsigned, and dangerous, The Weeknd, Drop X Life, Omari Shakir, and Julian. This is a crew to look out for, and with a backing from Drake there's endless possibilities because whether you like, Drake or OVO you must admit. He has power.

Every XO artist, and their mixtapes are available for free. The Weeknd's trilogy, Drop X Life's debut as well as Julian's "Black Heart"
This mixtpe is worth the listen. 7/10

Notable tracks: Believer, Pace It, Black Heart, Potion and Intrinsic Worth.
