JMSN - †Priscilla† (Album Review)

This review is long over due here at THE MVMNT, we've been wanting to do a review for this album for a while now, we just needed to wait and make it just right.  †Priscilla†  is one of those albums that you discover and never stop playing, we listen to JMSN daily. Fact.

†Priscilla† starts off with a "Choices" which is the introduction to his hit single Jameson, in this prelude we hear Christian's voicemail, and people who call him, never get a response and play the "big shot" card, the fame changed him according to the callers after the last message we are greeted with epic strings, and amazing vocal production. Moments are created in every second, from the door slams to the liquor being poured, to the harmonica that plays the lead. And it doesn't stop being good once he sings, it slows down, and with an eerie feel to the story we have that darkness that has been proven successful in the Experimental R&B genre, Christian drinks Jameson alone, and thinks about his life.. Typical, amazing production, and a brilliant song. 

       One thing to look for is the transition game that JMSN brings, and how amazing the post-production was, every song goes into the other flawlessly and  with that being said "Alone" was the first track that I ever heard from Christian, and I fell in love. The atmosphere, the filtered drums, the reverb vocals, the melodies, his epic falsetto chorus, and the crazy shit you notice if you're paying attention.. The bass riff on the down chorus, the dice, the sonar sound, the string play, the build ups, the vocals are amazing in every way. 

      From "Alone" we go to "Remember The Time" a pop tune in it's finest form, the vocals, the production almost has a boy band feel at some point, but he still keeps the experimental sense highly in effect. The strings, the drums. "Silencio, no hay banda, no hay orcesta". The bright guitars, that arp that constantly plays in the background, and of course Christian's voice asking us if we remember those times where thing were easier.                           

       Every track on this record is a good one, I mean there are some I've only heard a few times, but that's just because I've been busy listening to the other amazing songs. "Somewhere", "Fallin", "Fire", "Let U Go", "Lights" and "Nunca Se Sabra" are good songs, they're just not as good as the rest well in my opinion.

       "Something" is an amazing song in every sense, those guitars, the way the vocals are produced the beat, and the fucking crazy drum lines towards the end of the song. The chorus like alone, is a catchy falsetto and just suits the song's vibe all too well. 

       "Runaway" is a song I really liked, and it's one of those that doesn't get talked about all that much, it's an acoustic jam and the vocals are amazing, guitars like that compliment Christian's vocal ability to a tee. 

       "Love & Pain"... Sexy sax man, seriously though the saxophone on that lead line makes you want to have sex, and if it doesn't there's something wrong with you, the thing you notice about JMSN, from his strings and all of these sounds and instruments he uses, you can tell he's a multi- instrumentalist and that in itself gives you a huge level of respect for the artist.. This is an amazing song.

       "Girl I Used To Know" probably one my favorite songs, or at least one of the most catchy. The arp, the strings, the vocal production, those vocal runs that make me feel that I'm within a mix of funk, soul and most of all, old school pop music, like "Remember The Time" it reminds me of the boy band era in the late 1900's and early 2000's. The chorus and pre chorus are amazing, and there definitely of the sing along variety, and the lead in to the song's featured rapper, when those guitars start playing this funk solo almost, and then dude comes in with his verse, good verse also may I add, great song in general.
 
In conclusion, this album needs to be heard, not only by fans of Experimental R&B, but fans of music, this album is art, the production could be some of the best I've ever heard, and he did it all himself, Christian (JMSN) is a genius, and we have a great respect and admiration for him.
       Usher even spoke of JMSN and his album claiming that JMSN was his favorite new act.. Buy into the hype, because it's worth it as far as †Priscilla†

Julian - Black Heart(Mixtape Review)

      

Now, I assume all of us have heard The Weeknd, through Drake's successful "word of mouth" tactic, the doors for canadian native Abel Tesfaye opened quicker than the hearts and legs of his female listeners. He practically birthed a new movement, and put R&B back on the map with experimental sounds and ambiance, this dude samples Beach House, Thieves Like Us and other obscure acts. Now, he and Drake made a movement of their own, leaving all of the work behind them to fellow Toronto artists. OVOXO was born from both Drake's OVO (October's Very Own) and The Weeknd's XO. With that being said, for this review we focus on one of XO's finest, perhaps taking a few of The Weeknd's influence.. We introduce to you.. Julian Cruz (Julian) and his "Black Heart" mixtape.

Black Heart is an experimental R&B album in the very definition of the genre, with mixes of Spanish guitars, post-dub like beats, reverb induced piano and beautiful amplification of clean guitar tones worthy of a rock act, Julian's voice is complimented by various elements, like The Weeknd, and JMSN the beats are nothing short of intricate and interesting. A lot goes on behind the crooner, from the first track.. "Intrinsic Worth" we get this eerie feel from the get go, Julian's voice welcomes you as he sings, the song then immediately swings from pads into this guitar arp that leads into the verse, first lyrics have to do with the preparation Julian goes through before a sexual encounter, and then elaborates on the topic also by talking to the girl and basically showing her the ropes. Now, some people may notice that his voice and the music sometimes don't fit, something sounds off almost, well this record has absolutely no auto tune, completely natural which means he sometimes sings off key, you'd think that might be a horrible thing, but it sounds good. Who knows? Maybe more people will start singing off key if this record sees a lot of success. Anyway, "JOY" is the second song off of this album and this one's actually kind of touching, not in just a sexy way but it's legitimately a nice, pleasant song to listen to. Nice guitars, calming synth pads, and lyrics about that special someone, the beat also has some of those awesome modulated pitch samples we love so much. Something different, a direction into perhaps a more Indie band like feel, who knows. It works, it's weird but it works. But the cute message didn't last long, and who are we kidding, we love a good fuck song, we love sexual, sensual music. In his next track Julian picks up right where he left off, explaining to his partner how good he is in bed, he's very convincing when he tells her it's "Different This Time" he even asks the girl if she knows what she's doing at one point, a tale of drugs, hot women, something we've heard from XO before, and all I'm saying is that we would like to be invited to one of these occasions, these songs make everyone to party with XO. So bring the pads, the weird vocal production and throw in some riffs that sound like Carlos Santana himself was in the booth and I think any woman would like to get naked. It's nature, Julian understood this and he continues this process for much of the album, "Ascencion", "Pace It", "Bonita" (Pretty Lady) are loaded with these classical guitar tones, as for "Potion" and the title track "Black Heart" have a much darker creepy tone, clean yet creepy.. Some effects, maybe some wah or anything that could be found on any guitarist's pedal board, but damn it sounds so good. One of favorite tracks, "Believer" has this incredible piano tone, and could not sound sexier, the drums are so elaborate for an R&B track, and in the bridge has this sort of drop with some synth. In this track Julian speaks on what he does best apparently, fuck and we don't mind it, because these songs are dope. The introduction to "Black Heart" is amazing, and could have not been produced better, that track takes and finishes the album with a bang, the dubstep like bass and the rock band like vocals, it's short but so good. And even with it's brief duration still manages to make us love the track.

In conclusion, XO is a group of talented people. Musicians, video directors, artists in both visual realm as well as production, they need not one outsider to step in. Unsigned, and dangerous, The Weeknd, Drop X Life, Omari Shakir, and Julian. This is a crew to look out for, and with a backing from Drake there's endless possibilities because whether you like, Drake or OVO you must admit. He has power.
